PENGUIN KIDS FACTSHEET The characters Ariel is a young mermaid. She loves human things. King Triton is Ariel’s father. He is king of the sea. Prince Eric is a human prince. He is young and handsome. Have any students swum in the ocean? Has anyone been to an aquarium? What did the students see? What do they like about the ocean? What are the dangers to humans at sea? Being human Ariel loves human things and dreams of becoming human to join Prince Eric. How are humans different from Ariel? How are humans different from sea creatures and other animals in the real world? What can humans do that animals can’t? Parents and children Why does Triton get angry with Ariel? Is he right? Why does Ariel ignore her father? Should she always do what he says? Should the students always do what their parents tell them? (See also Activity 3 on page 3 of this Factsheet.) Myths Mermaids are mythical creatures. The names Ariel and Triton come from Greek mythology. Myths are traditional stories that explain things about our world. Do the students know any mythical stories? What mythical creatures do they know? (See also Activity 2 on page 3 of this Factsheet.) secret (adj) storm (n) top (n) toward (prep) Pastimes / activities Ask the students what activities in the story can also be pastimes (singing, collecting things, swimming, sailing). Write the words on the board. Which of these activities do the students like doing? Can they tell you more about these activities? Love and romance Ariel falls in love with Prince Eric. Can the students tell you why this happens. What happens when someone is in love? Have any students seen the film? Can they tell you what happens to Ariel and Eric in the end? (They defeat the wicked sea witch, Ariel becomes human, and they marry.) Notes on the photocopiable activities Page 5: Students could paste the list of Key words into a notebook. You could ask students to learn this vocabulary as homework and then test them on it. Pages 8–9: After-Reading activities, Activity 2 You could also ask the students to make a chart comparing humans with an animal of their choice.
